As with many cancers, cancer treatment of esophagus has a better chance of success if the cancer is detected early. But unfortunately, by the time esophageal cancer is diagnosed for many people, it is often already in an advanced stage, which has metastasized already to other parts of the body.
Esophageal cancer is the 9th most common form of cancer worldwide. Esophageal cancer treatment and the prognosis depends on many factors such as the etiology, the staging of the cancer, whether the tumor could be surgically removed completely, and the overall health of the patient. The order of treatments varies, and several factors are considered, even including the type of esophageal cancer.
• Patients require special nutritional needs during treatment for esophageal cancer.
• Six types of standard treatment are used:
o Radiation therapy
o Chemoradiation therapy
o Laser therapy
o Targeted therapy ( new types of treatments that are on clinical trial )
• It may cause side effects when treating esophageal cancers. Patients may want to think about taking part in a clinical trial. Patients can enter clinical trials before, during, or after starting their cancer treatment.
• Follow-up tests could be needed.
